Keyes Launches Himself With Huge Game vs. Taft

Dennis Keyes, a junior running back for Van Nuys Birmingham, had a spectacular game last week, helping Birmingham defeat Taft of Woodland Hills, 40-21.

In a game that featured another junior star, Steve Smith of Taft  (last season's Cal-Hi Sports State Sophomore of the Year), the 6-1, 185-pound Keyes rushed for 216 yards on 26 carries, caught a 96-yard TD pass and made several jarring tackles from his defensive back position.

Smith did catch eight passes for 101 yards and one TD, but Keyes was still the pivotal player.

Coach Ed Croson of Birmingham told the Los Angeles Times: "Every week, he seems to do the unbelievable."

Birmingham, which won the West Valley League title last season, wants to prove that last year wasn't a fluke and show it can compete with other top L.A. City Section teams such as Carson and Crenshaw.
