New NorCal Rushing Record

Bethel High of Vallejo is only in its second year of having seniors, but football running back Dallas Bernstine made sure on Saturday that the new school will be in the state and NorCal record books for years to come.

Bernstine carried 21 times and gained 555 yards as the Jaguars swamped Vintage of Napa 59-38 in a Monticello Empire League game. He scored on runs of 78, 23 and 67 yards in the first half and added scoring runs of 78 and 60 yards in the second half. Bernstine's 60-yard run was his final carry of the day and put him over the 500-yard mark.

Bernstine, who transferred to Bethel this season after previously playing at Vallejo High, broke the previous Northern California and CIF Sac-Joaquin record of 460 yards set in 1997 by Johnnie Randle from Bear Creek of Stockton. He also is now No. 2 on the all-time single game state list behind the 619 yards picked up by Oxnard Hueneme's Ronney Jenkins in a 1995 game. Jenkins' total also is the all-time national record.

With Bernstine leading the way, Bethel also rang up a team rushing total against Vintage of 678 yards. That sets a new NorCal mark as well, surpassing the previous record of 672 set in 1998 by Clovis West of Fresno. The state team record for most yards rushing in a game of 736 yards was set in 1992 by Life Christian of Downey.
