State Athletes of the Week

This week's State Athletes of the Week are QB Matt Moore of Hart High School in Newhall and outside hitter Tessa Sphar of Mitty in San Jose.

Boys: Matt Moore

(Hart, Newhall)

Following Pac-10 recruits Kyle Boller (Cal) and Kyle Matter (Stanford) as the starting quarterback position at Hart has not been a problem for Moore. The 6-3, 185-pounder, who also is headed to the Pac-10 after he committed to UCLA recently, has kept the Indians on a winning track. In last week's 33-0 victory over Canyon of Canyon Country, Moore completed 28 of 38 passes for 318 yards and four TDs. In one stretch, he completed 12 passes in a row and he also scored on a short run. With one game left in the regular season, Moore has thrown for a reported 1,889 yards and 21 TDs. He also is an outstanding baseball player.

Girls: Tessa Sphar

(Mitty, San Jose)

Sphar led Mitty to a big comeback win in volleyball last week over Mt. Hamilton League rival Presentation. After Presentation won the first two games of the match 15-9, 15-10, the Monarchs came back to win three games by 15-13, 15-9, 15-12. Sphar, who was league MVP last year as a junior, finished with a match-high 22 kills. The 5-10 senior outside hitter has helped Mitty to a 26-2 record, 14-0 in league. If the Monarchs had lost to Presentation, they likely would have fallen out of the top 20 in the Student Sports national rankings. Mitty is favored to advance to this year's Div. I state finals.
