State Athletes of the Week

This week's State Athletes of the Week are senior forward Grant Nishio of the Jesuit (Carmichael) soccer team and senior outside hitter Jennifer Randall of Long Beach Poly. State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Grant Nishio

(Jesuit, Carmichael)

After scoring what proved to be the winning goal in an epic boys soccer match against Davis, Nishio came through with a hat track as the Marauders won the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I title with a 5-1 win over Lodi. After Lodi took an early 1-0 lead, Jesuit went on the offensive. Nishio, a senior forward, netted goals in the 18th, 37th and 61st minutes. He keyed another goal by being tackled in the penalty box, which was converted for a score on a penalty kick. Nishio's goal against Davis gave Jesuit a 2-0 lead in a match-up of nationally ranked powers that the Marauders eventually won, 2-1. Jesuit finished 27-1-1 for the most victories in school history and is ranked No. 4 this week in the Student Sports FAB 50 national rankings.

Girls: Jennifer Randall

(Poly, Long Beach)

The 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter is a holdover from last year's Jackrabbit team that was ranked in the top 10 nationally and won a CIF Southern Section Div. I title. Randall had 38 kills in a match last week as Poly won a Div. I-AA quarterfinal match over Upland by scores of 15-13, 14-16, 5-15, 15-13, 15-3. Randall was named a preseason All-American by Student Sports Magazine. Upland led 12-7 in the fourth game of the wild match, but Randall sparked a comeback and led a dominant effort by the Jackrabbits in the fifth game.
