State Athletes of the Week
Boys: A.J. Martinez
(Edison, Huntington Beach)
All-state candidate at defensive back returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a TD to get the Chargers going in their eventual 47-14 win over Bishop Amat of La Puente in the CIFSS Div. I quarterfinals. Martinez also caught a TD pass from 15 yards out, rushed for a 37-yard score and had one interception on defense. Martinez also is a speedy base-stealer and outstanding hitter for Edison's baseball team, which last spring won the CIFSS Div. II crown.
Girls: Olga Aulet-Leon
(Peninsula, Rolling Hills Estates)
This cross-country runner deserves honors for her inspirational outing in last Saturday's CIF Div. I final at Fresno's Woodward Park. Aulet-Leon is normally Peninsula's No. 5 or No. 6 runner, but came up big with a 31st overall effort in the state final. Teammate Emily Vince finished second overall, but Aulet-Leon's personal best time (19:12) pushed Peninsula all the way to the Div. I team championship. The Panthers had 146 points and edged Dana Hills of Dana Point (153), Thousand Oaks (161) and Esperanza of Anaheim (169) in team scoring. Aulet-Leon also has battled asthma attacks throughout the season. The team title was an unexpected prize for retiring Peninsula coach Joe Kelly, who is ending a 33-year teaching and coaching career at the end of the school year. Kelly's girls team won for the second straight year and for the sixth time overall (three came at Palos Verdes High before Peninsula was created through consolidation). The Peninsula boys also won a Div. I state title in 1996.
