State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Kenny Brown
(North, Torrance)

Brown has been one of those versatile type quarterbacks all year who can beat opponents with his arm or his legs. Last week, with North Torrance trailing 33-21 at halftime, Brown let loose with his arm as the Saxons rallied to beat Inglewood, 42-33, and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Div. X title game opposite league rival Santa Monica. Brown finished with 331 yards passing and six touchdowns. On defense, Brown also shined as a free safety and came up with an interception.

Girls: Courtney Schultz
(Harvard-Westlake, North Hollywood)

It's been a tough year in some respects for Schultz as the preseason All-American and Stanford-bound standout has endured the injury bug. But in last weekend's CIF state championships, Schultz ended the season on a high note as she led her team to its second straight Div. III title. The 6-1 senior finished with 17 kills and 10 digs to lead Harvard-Westlake past El Molino of Forestville, 15-12, 15-11, 15-12. Schultz also was named match MVP for the second straight year.
