State Athletes of the Week State Athletes of the Week

Girls: Amber Trotter
We know we've picked Amber before, but since she's the Student Sports National Athlete of the Week we're sort of forced to pick her for this spot again, too. Trotter has not only won every cross country race this season, but she has dominated all season. Last Saturday at Walt Disney World she capped off her season by winning the Footlocker Cross Country National title. Trotter led from the opening gun to set a new course record of 16 minutes, 24 seconds, which was held by last season's winner, Sara Bei from Montgomery of Santa Rosa (Calif). In winning her first national title, Trotter beat runner-up Erika Odlaug of Illinois by 40 seconds but told the Press Democrat that "It doesn't matter if it's by five seconds or 40, it just feels great to be the national champion." Amber will be running for NCAA Division III Middlebury College in Vermont next year.

Boys: Scott White
(Mission Bay, San Diego)
Mission Bay crushed previously unbeaten Marian Catholic 37-7 in front of a standing room only crowd of over 5,500 at Mesa College last Friday in the San Diego Section Div. III championship game.  It was all White, as the highly regarded and heavily recruited 6-2, 230-pound running back/linebacker rushed for 82 yards on 17 carries, scored 4 touchdowns and ran for a 2-pt conversion. White also blocked a punt and recorded three sacks of Marian quarterback Mario Ledesma, as the Buccaneer defense harassed Ledesma all game and completely shut down an offense that came in averaging 47.3 points a game.
