State Athletes of the Week

Bakersfield's Sherley one of five individual winners for nation's No. 1 wrestling team at major tourney in Clovis. Tustin Foothill's Feher stars in one of the top girls water polo tourneys in the nation.

State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Josh Sherley (Bakersfield)

This senior was recently named second-team all-state in football for starring as a wide receiver and defensive back on Bakersfield's undefeated team. Sherley is now a key member of a Driller wrestling squad that is ranked No. 1 in the nation. He was one of five individual champions for Bakersfield in last weekend's Doc Buchanan tourney in Clovis. Sherley took on Lemoore's Sven Hafenmeister in the 160-pound finals and posted a 6-1 victory. The Drillers piled up more than 300 points at the tourney and look like a strong favorite to add a CIF state wrestling title to the school's already legendary athletic resume.

Girls: Emily Feher (Foothill, Tustin)

Feher was named the MVP of last weekend's Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions in water polo. She was in goal and turned away numerous saves in both the final and semifinal matches. Feher had six saves in the final as the Knights downed Santa Barbara, 5-2, in the title match. The win upped Foothill's record to 13-0 and pushed its winning streak to 36 matches. Feher had 10 saves in the semis, which Foothill won, 5-4, against Newport Harbor of Newport Beach. Also in the tourney was Santa Margarita of Rancho Santa Margarita, which is led by U.S. junior national team standout Kristina Kunkel.
