New Girls BB State Top 20

San Clemente's win over Troy in Orange County showdown, Artesia's near-upset of Lynwood and Berkeley's win over Marin Catholic cause difficult choices to be made in the No. 4, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7 positions in this week's rankings.

(Compiled by Mark and Nelson Tennis)

(All divisions; NorCal & SoCal combined)

1. (1) Lynwood 18-0

The legend of Sa'de grows as her layup with five seconds left capped incredible comeback win over Artesia.

2. (2) Narbonne (Harbor City) 14-3

Gauchos will be spending most of their time now fine-tuning for the postseason.

3. (4) Poly (Long Beach) 20-0

Big week looming for Jackrabbits with games against Long Beach Wilson and La Jolla Country Day.

4. (6) Artesia (Lakewood) 12-5

It's always fun rewarding a team that takes on the No. 1 ranked squad in the country and comes within a whisker of winning.

5. (3) Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 12-3

Wildcats' loss to Berkeley only drops them a little since their other two were in competitive matchups vs. Narbonne and Christ The King (N.Y.).

6. (7) San Clemente 16-3

After Monday's 66-62 win over Troy, maybe this is too low. But Marin Catholic still has a win over Highlands Ranch (Colo.) and Tritons still have a loss to Peddie School (N.J.).

7. (5) Troy (Fullerton) 17-1

Coming back from 18-point deficit and getting it down to 63-62 vs. San Clemente keeps Warriors atop Div. II state rankings.

8. (8) La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla) 15-3

One of last year's top two frosh, Candice Wiggins, scored 37 in 68-53 win Monday over Norco, which has Erika Arrarian, one of this year's top frosh.

9. (10) Ventura 17-2

Cougars will play Buena and Santa Barbara in second half of Channel League play on the road.

10. (9) Brea-Olinda (Brea) 11-6

Ladycats lost for second time this season last week to San Clemente, but they only dropped one spot since score was 49-42.

11. (11) Pinewood (Los Altos Hills) 11-2

We don't think Panthers should be ahead of Marin Catholic in NorCal since the two have an upcoming game. If they win, then they can move up.

12. (12) St. Mary's (Stockton) 16-3

Rams are definite possibility for Div. II state finals if post players Tiffany Drucker and Lorissa Ewing continue to improve.

13. (nr) Wilson (Long Beach) 17-4

Brandi Knight's four late free throws and 30 points overall too much for Bishop Montgomery as Bruins win a big one, 56-54, on Monday.

14. (13) Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) 15-4

Noelle Quinn had 28 in loss to Long Beach Wilson, which resulted in more of reward in the rankings for Wilson than a hit to the Knights.

15. (15) Santana (Santee) 18-1

Jackie Turpin almost had quadruple-double with 11 pts, 10 assists, 9 steals and 8 rebounds in win over El Capitan.

16. (16) Bishop's (La Jolla) 16-2

Sarah Ringer had 33 points and helped hold down San Diego's Charde Houston to just 23 as Knights won 69-64 in overtime.

17. (17) Woodbridge (Irvine) 19-2

Warriors came up with their most impressive win of the year last week when they spanked 15-2 Santa Margarita, 48-30.

18. (18) Hart (Newhall) 17-3

Coach Dave Munroe's squad should cruise through the Foothill League for the rest of the regular season.

19. (19) Ursuline (Santa Rosa) 15-1

Big win way back in early December over Mitty has been carrying a lot of weight for a long time.

20. (nr) Mitty (San Jose) 12-4

Last week's overtime win over East Anchorage (Alaska) should help greatly in maturation of team comprised mostly of juniors.
