No question Giovanni Stanley of Tracy high school is a diamond in the rough.  He only competed in four varsity games last season and had five catches at an average of twenty yards per catch. But at 6'3 and nearly 210 pounds and running in the 4.6 range this wide receiver has the size that D-1 recruiters crave.  This off season Giovanni is concentrating on football.  So no longer is he playing forty to fifty AAU basketball games, instead he is in the weight room, running track and honing his receiving skills, working out with his cousin Fresno State wide receiver Joey Fernandez.  If this off season commitment pays off Stanley could be a steal for the college program that comes knocking on his door.

PrepCA: What is your official height and weight?

Giovanni Stanley: I'm 6'3 and just under 210 pounds.

PrepCA: How long have you played football?

Giovanni Stanley: I have played since 6th grade.

PrepCA: In that time what is your greatest football memory?

Giovanni Stanley: I caught a last second game winning pass for my freshman team.

PrepCA: What are your personal goals for the upcoming season?

Giovanni Stanley: Lead my team to the playoffs and try to go as far as we can go.  Try to go undefeated in league.  Individually, I would like to be player of the year in my conference.  1st team all conference.  Ultimately I would love to play in the All – American game, but we will see how that goes.

PrepCA:  How are you preparing for the upcoming season? Will you attend any camps this summer? Have you gone to any combines?

Giovanni Stanley: I will be attending the Nike combine at Stanford.  I'm going to the MSL combine at Long Beach the week after the Nike combine.

PrepCA: Who are some of your teammates that people need to watch out for?

Giovanni Stanley: Marquise Ceasar our running back, he transferred but may be coming back to Tracy.

PrepCA: Name one teammate you really respect and why?

Giovanni Stanley: Greg Yerian, Greg is a senior.  He is disabled.  He has the most heart that I have seen.  He comes out every day to practice.  He knows he is not going to play but he comes out every day to practice with drive, heart and everything.

PrepCA:  What is Tracy high school going to do to improve from last season?

Giovanni Stanley: Work harder during practice.  I'm going to try to motivate the team more.  Approach practice like a game.

PrepCA: If everything works out and you have a big senior year who would be the top five schools you would like to be recruited by?

Giovanni Stanley: Fresno State, Washington, Grambling, Howard and Oregon.

PrepCA:  Of that list is Fresno your favorite?

Giovanni Stanley:  Yea, it is close but not too close.  I could be with my cousin. (Fresno WR Joey Fernandez)

PrepCA:  Who is the best player you ever played against? Why?

Giovanni Stanley:  I would have to say St. Mary's QB Wiilie Tuitama.  He is hard to take down.

PrepCA:   Name one team who you really respect and why?

Giovanni Stanley:  St. Mary's

PrepCA:   What other sports do you play?

Giovanni Stanley:  I play AAU basketball and run track.

PrepCA: What are your best max lifts in the bench, squat, power clean and 40 yard dash?

Giovanni Stanley: Bench 210, Squat 405. I have not maxed on the clean yet.

PrepCA:  Who is your favorite pro athlete and why?

Giovanni Stanley: Chad Johnson and Mike Williams.  Mike Williams, because I have my own game, but if I had to compare it to anyone it would be Mike Williams. Chad Johnson, his attitude and swagger of how he approaches the game.   He is convinced he is the best player on the field.

PrepCA: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Giovanni Stanley: Hard work and you can do whatever you want.  The sky is the limit.

PrepCA would like to thank Giovanni and his family for helping put this interview together.
