New State Top 20 Girls BB Rankings

Long Beach Wilson and Esperanza are both new this week, but not much else changed in this week's rankings. No. 1 Lynwood and No. 3 Poly both start the playoffs Saturday in the CIF Southern Section Div. I-AA bracket. No. 4 Artesia enters its postseason without top-flight center Lauren Ervin.

1. (1) Lynwood 24-0

Knights open CIF Southern Section Div. I-AA playoffs Saturday against either Alhambra or El Rancho. It will be a rout, either way.

2. (2) Narbonne (Harbor City) 21-3

The only teams in the L.A. City Section championships who figure to give the Gauchos a whiff of a good game are Westchester and Palisades.

3. (3) Poly (Long Beach) 28-0

Tameca Simmons scored 23 points in win vs. Millikan as Jackrabbits wrapped up second straight Moore League title.

4. (4) Artesia (Lakewood) 20-5

With Lauren Ervin gone for the season, the Div. III state title race suddenly looks a bit more wide open.

5. (5) San Clemente 22-3

Sara Brown hit for 22 points in win over Dana Hills. Tritons are top seed in CIFSS Div. I-A (not the same division as Lynwood and Poly).

6. (6) Ventura 23-2

Going unbeaten in the Channel League, which means sweeping Buena and Santa Barbara, is quite an accomplishment indeed.

7. (7) La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla) 20-4

Candice Wiggins (25) and June Brubaker (22) both scored well in easy win over Francis Parker.

8. (8) Brea-Olinda (Brea) 19-6

With Jeff Sink coaching, the Ladycats are definitely among the mix of teams capable of winning the Div. II state title.

9. (9) Pinewood (Los Altos Hills) 21-2

Panthers traveled to north of Sacramento last Saturday, but didn't get much of a test in comfortable win over Vallejo.

10. (10) Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 18-4

Kennedy of Sacramento, No. 1 in that area, was no match for the Wildcats in the second-half of last Saturday's 59-39 victory.

11. (11) St. Mary's (Stockton) 22-3

Unsung hero Stacey Amick scored nine points in the 4th quarter and Dominique Banks had 22 overall in 73-65 win over previous No. 14 Mitty.

12. (12) Ayala (Chino Hills) 21-4

Bulldogs will take 59-game league win streak into next year after final regular season win over St. Lucy's.

13. (13) Troy (Fullerton) 24-2

Alicia Komaki continues to excel at the point with 12 assists in 73-35 triumph over Fullerton.

14. (14) Bishop's (La Jolla) 21-3

Coach Fentriss Winn will have a team that's playoff ready after Friday's matchup against La Jolla Country Day.

15. (15) Ursuline (Santa Rosa) 22-1

Great balance in the scoring column for the Bears in win over Santa Rosa as no one was in double figures.

16. (18) Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) 20-5

Knights revved up for their try to win a third straight Div. III state title by beating Div. IV power St. Bernard, 76-61.

17. (20) Berkeley 16-7

Purdue-bound Sabrina Keys and the Jackets beat Div. II power Amador Valley, 68-56, as late season surge continues.

18. (19) Santana (Santee) 24-2

Sultans bounced back from loss to La Jolla Country with two easy wins. Jackie Turpin had 23 points, 10 rebounds vs. El Capitan.

19. (nr) Wilson (Long Beach) 23-5

Brandi Knight came up strong with 26 points and five steals in 68-36 romp past Lakewood.

20. (nr) Esperanza (Anaheim) 22-4

Aztecs wrapped up Sunset League title with second win of the season over Edison of Huntington Beach.
