Player Spotlight: Matt Evans

Interview with St. Bonaventure QB

Our next interview comes from the other half of St. Bonaventure's two-headed quarterback monster. Matt Evans in half a year what many would consider a pretty good full season. Look for St. Bonaventure to pull out all of the stops with Matt and Samson Szakacsy in the game.

PrepCA: What were your stats from last season?

Matt Evans: I split time last year and was still able to throw for over 1,100 yards and 17 TDs. My completion percentage was 63% with a QB rating of 108.0.

PrepCA: What is your greatest football memory?

Matt: Nothing can be more exciting than playing in a CIF Championship game. I am very fortunate to have been in three CIF Championship games in three years, winning one my freshman year and again my junior year.

PrepCA: What are you doing to prepare for this coming season? Will you be attending any camps?

Matt: The team and I am lifting extremely hard and doing a lot of speed training. I am also attending a few different quarterback camps. All the camps that I go to seem to be helping a lot because I pick up something new every time I go.

PrepCA: What are your goals for this upcoming season?

Matt: I plan on becoming bigger, faster, and stronger. Also help lead my team to another CIF Title.

PrepCA: What is your biggest strength as a player?

Matt: I would have to say leadership on and off the field. I am constantly trying to make good decisions; whether it has to do with reading the books, or reading the defenses.

PrepCA: What is your biggest weakness as a player? What are you doing to help this?

Matt: Some would say my biggest weakness is not being the 6'4" quarterback, but I will prove that it's not in the height; it's in the heart. I want to improve my foot speed and become more of a dual threat quarterback.

PrepCA: Who are some of your teammates that people need to watch out for?

Matt: THE WHOLE TEAM! But some of the stand-outs are Kyle Maddux (DE), Adam Liranzo (CB), Dwight Roberson (MLB), Trevor Lyne (DT); the whole O-Line, such as Steve Anderson (RT), and Mike Young (RG) and then the skilled position players like Ricky Garcia [WR(#6)], Kevin Ballard [WR(#2)], and Glenn Wakam [WR(#21)] and Samson Szakacsy.

PrepCA: Which teammate do you really respect the most on your team? Why?

Matt: Kevin Ballard, no one has a bigger heart than KB. Even though he missed most of the season last year because of a knee injury, he has always been there for the team if anyone needed help because he is an extremely smart player and he knows his assignments. He has been working extremely hard and will be ready to go!

PrepCA: Which opponent do you really respect? Which opposing school do you respect most?

Matt: Opponent wise, Luther Brown and Adrian McCovey from Lakewood because of their passion for the game and athletic ability. Team wise, Hart High School. Playing in that game is always a battle between two very well coached teams. They're big, fast, and always seem to bring their "A-Game."

PrepCA: What is the best piece of advice you've ever gotten in your life? Who did you get it from?

Matt: "Focus, and always keep your head up!" –Grandma Medina.

PrepCA: Who has been the most influential person in your life?

Matt: My grandpa Leo. Even though he passed away, I always play for Grandpa Leo.

PrepCA: Who is your favorite professional player in any sport?

Matt: John Elway because he was a leader on and off the field and he always found a way to win.

PrepCA: What can we expect from your team this season?

Matt: Winning Game 14, Div. 4 CIF Championship.

PrepCA: What is your team currently doing to prepare for this season?

Matt: Working hard in the weight room for strength and explosiveness, also on the field for speed and timing.

PrepCA: What are your goals as far as playing in college?

Matt: I would love to get a scholarship to a school that will have the right fit for me academically and athletically.

PrepCA: What can you bring to a college team?

Matt: Leadership, PASSION, Attitude and Effort.

PrepCA: What is your favorite thing about the game of football?

Matt: The concept of TEAM and my PASSION for the game.

PrepCA: Who is currently sending you letters? Any early offers?

Matt: A lot of Ivy League Schools and Boston College, but I have yet to receive offers from any school.

The staff at PrepCA would like to thank Matt for his time and wish him luck during the upcoming season. Anyone wishing to contact Matt may email
