State Athletes of the Week

Boys honor goes to a basketball player who scored more than 40 points in two different games. Girls honor nabbed by a soccer player from one of the nation's hotbeds for the sport.

State Athletes of the Week

Boys: DeMarcus Nelson

The 2001 State Freshman of the Year in boys basketball is on track to be the top sophomore for 2002. Nelson soared last week in two games for the Apaches as they improved to 23-5 and wrapped up a league title. In a 88-46 victory over Vintage of Napa, the 6-1 guard revved up for 40 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. But he wasn't through just yet. In Nelson's next game, a 79-59 triumph over crosstown rival Hogan, he did even better with 45 points and 11 rebounds. Nelson had to shoulder more of the scoring load for Vallejo in both games as starters Amos Carter and Madison Butts battled injury problems. Nelson was Vallejo's starting quarterback in football last fall and plans to play baseball this spring.

Girls: Stevie Kernan

(Amador Valley, Pleasanton)

One of the top soccer players in Northern California, Kernan posted a three-goal hat trick in leading the Dons to a 3-0 win last week over perennial power Carondelet of Concord. All three goals were made on difficult shots, including one into the high corner of the net that earned Kernan "Play of the Week" honors on the new Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area TV show. Last year, Kernan pulled double-duty in the winter as a key player on Amador Valley's basketball team. She is not doing the same double-duty this year, concentrating more on soccer.
