State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Eugene Jeter

(Serra, Gardena)

One of the most exciting players in Southern California, the one they call Pooh scored 26 points and dished out 11 assists in a stunning 74-67 come-from-behind CIF Southern Section Div. IV playoff victory over Kilpatrick. In his next game, the 5-8 point guard added 28 points in a 91-68 win over Calvary Chapel-Downey. Jeter (it's pronounced Jet-ter, not gee-ter) led Serra during the regular season to the championship of the Del Rey League, one of the toughest leagues in the state.

Girls: Adrienne Herbst

(Santa Teresa, San Jose)

The San Jose Mercury-News Athlete of the Week gets the statewide nod, too. Herbst finished her soccer season last week by recording her fifth straight shutout as the goalie to lead Santa Teresa past Carlmont of Belmont in the CIF Central Coast Section Div. I championship game. Herbst gave up just six goals in a 23-game season and was credited with 17 shutouts. The senior will continue playing soccer in college next year at the University of the Pacific.
