Player Spotlight: Jacob Manuel

Jacob Manuel of the Rio Mesa Spartans (Oxnard, Ca) hopes to continue on last year's performance.  Running in the 4.8 range at 6'3 263 pounds, Jacob has attracted the attention of many schools including Fresno State, San Diego State, Arizona and others who are looking for a talented defensive lineman.  Currently Jacob plays tight end and defensive end but most colleges are looking at him as a defensive end or even a defensive tackle.

 

PrepCA: What is your favorite thing about playing high school football?

Jacob Manuel: Hitting.  That is the main reason why I like football.  The games.  I love the games, staying intense.  Being on a football team is better than being on any other type of team.

 

PrepCA: What is your official height and weight?

Jacob Manuel: 6'3 263 pounds.  Last season I was 245 pounds.

 

PrepCA: What is your greatest football memory?

Jacob Manuel: This whole last season.  How we went 3-7 the year before then we went 11-1.  We went through a lot this past season.  Our principal died and then our offensive coordinator died.

 

PrepCA: What are your personal goals for the upcoming season?

Jacob Manuel: I want to have the best season I have ever had.  I want to be in the best shape I have ever been in.  I want to be a lot stronger.  I want to be able to dominate everyone. 

 

PrepCA: How are you preparing for the upcoming season?

Jacob Manuel: I'm lifting five days a week.  I'm training really hard.  I have been working on my hands a lot and my side to side quickness.  Working on staying low.

 

PrepCA:  What aspect of your game have you really worked hard to improve? What area would you like to keep improving on?

Jacob Manuel: My quickness.  I'm really working on my get off from the line.

 

PrepCA: Who are some of your teammates that people need to watch out for?

Jacob Manuel: A corner named Marcelo Thomas. DB/WR Tomek Czerwinski.  We have Malachi Lewis who is a 6'3 210 pound running back.  He will be a junior next year. He should be a really big prospect. 

 

PrepCA: Name one teammate you really respect and why?

Jacob Manuel: Marcelo Thomas, over the past season he has made a lot of improvement on his speed and size.  His coverage skills are way better. 

 

PrepCA: Who is currently recruiting you? Do you have any offers yet?

Jacob Manuel: San Diego State and Fresno State are recruiting me the hardest.  Washington State and Arizona also. Cal and Oregon State a little bit.  I do not have any written offers yet. San Diego State says I should be getting an offer sometime in the summer.

 

PrepCA: Who are your top 5?

Jacob Manuel: San Diego State, Oregon, Cal, Arizona, USC

 

PrepCA: What position are colleges recruiting you to play? 

Jacob Manuel: Defensive end or defensive tackle.

 

PrepCA:  Who are some of  the best players you ever played against? Why?

Jacob Manuel: Josh Pinkard currently at USC. Chris Davis now at Colorado and Mike Dominguez who is at Boise State.

 

PrepCA: What other sports do you play?

Jacob Manuel: I throw the disc and I used to play basketball.

 

PrepCA: What are your best max lifts in the bench, squat, power clean and 40 yard dash?

Jacob Manuel: 345 pound bench and my speed coach has timed me at a 4.87 forty.

 

PrepCA: How do you think your coach would describe you as a player?

Jacob Manuel: A tough player a good leader, who plays with a lot of intensity.

 

PrepCA: Who is your favorite pro athlete and why?

Jacob Manuel: Mike Tyson.  I have liked him since I was little.

 

PrepCA:  What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? Who did you receive it from?

Jacob Manuel: You play like you practice.
