New State Overall Girls BB Top 20 Rankings

Top seven from last week stayed the same despite usual volatility of playoffs, but Ursuline of Santa Rosa climbed up to No. 8 after big win over Marin Catholic. Berkeley, Bishop Montgomery and St. Ignatius also on the rise.

(All divisions combined; after games of March 2; last week's rank in parentheses)

1. (1) Lynwood 29-0

Two close games vs. Ayala and L.B. Poly, but Knights won CIF Southern Section Div. I-AA title as Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood took over both games down the stretch.

2. (2) Narbonne (Harbor City) 25-3

Coach James Anderson's squad won third straight L.A. City Section crown with easy win over Chatsworth.

3. (3) Poly (Long Beach) 32-1

Jackrabbits edged Ayala, 42-40, in CIFSS Div. I-AA semis then lost close one to Lynwood in game that could have gone either way.

4. (4) Artesia (Lakewood) 24-5

Pioneers overwhelmed Apple Valley, 55-37, to win second straight CIFSS crown. This year it was Div. III, last year Div. II.

5. (5) San Clemente 27-3

Coach Mary Mulligan might be glad Tritons could face Lynwood in SoCal Div. I semis instead of Narbonne as matchups might be more favorable.

6. (6) Ventura 28-2

Cougars deserve to move up after their 61-43 win over Troy for CIFSS Div. II-AA title, but no one above them lost (except LB Poly to Lynwood).

7. (7) Pinewood (Los Altos Hills) 26-2

Katy Digovich starred in the paint as Panthers grabbed fifth straight CCS title (this one in Div. II) with 54-43 win over Aragon of San Mateo.

8. (14) Ursuline (Santa Rosa) 30-1

Time to hop the Bears up there after their 42-37 win over Marin Catholic. Remember, only loss by just three to Pinewood without three key players.

9. (10) St. Mary's (Stockton) 29-3

Dominique Banks had 20 points and nine rebounds as Rams won fourth straight CIF Sac-Joaquin Section crown by beating Vacaville, 63-42.

10. (11) Ayala (Chino Hills) 26-5

If Kia Riley had not fouled out with 2:39 left in 42-40 loss to L.B. Poly, who knows where the Bulldogs would be playing this week?

11. (12) Bishop's (La Jolla) 25-3

We could've moved up Bishop's to No. 1 in Div. IV with Marin Catholic losing, but instead went with the team MC lost to.

12. (13) La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla) 23-5

Kudos to Julian, LCJD's out-classed foe in SD Sec title game, for playing hard throughout 108-35 loss.

13. (17) Berkeley 22-8

Yellowjackets won their seventh straight CIFNCS title with 60-53 win over Pittsburg. Figure to start NorCal Div. I playoffs at home vs. St. Ignatius.

14. (15) Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) 24-5

Defending CIF Div. III state champs should get past Apple Valley in SoCal regional opener, but it'll be tough going after that.

15. (16) Wilson (Long Beach) 26-6

Other than a 13-0 run in the third quarter, the Bruins beat No. 1 Lynwood for most of the two teams' CIFSS Div. I-AA semifinal.

16. (9) Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 25-5

Wildcats will have to win twice on the road to even hope to get another shot at Ursuline in NorCal Div. IV final.

17. (18) Santana (Santee) 28-2

After what school and team went through a year ago it sure would be nice to see the Sultans do well in SoCal Div. III playoffs.

18. (20) Pleasant Valley (Chico) 24-2

Big hoops by Lauren Himmelspach paced 47-44 win over Foothill for Northern Sec Div. I-II title. PV top seed for NorCal Div. I playoffs.

19. (nr) St. Ignatius (San Francisco) 25-3

Boston College-bound Katie Meinhardt has looked like one of the top players in NorCal over the last few weeks.

20. (nr) Miramonte (Orinda) 26-3

Coach Darrell Hirashima has a great one-two punch in guard Molly Nohr and center Tori Markey.
