State Athletes of the Week

Top honors for the week go to wrestler from state championship team who made history and top soph from nation's No. 1 girls basketball team.

State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Darrell Vasquez

Just as it was a no-brainer that Darrell was named the Champion of Champions in a vote of all 14 CIF individual winners that concluded last weekend's CIF state championships in Stockton, it's also a no-brainer that he receive any and all athlete of the week honors. Vasquez became the first four-time individual champion in the 30-year history of the California state championships, a feat more remarkable since California's championships are not broken up into divisions. Vasquez had little difficulty in wrapping up his fourth title, too. After pinning his first opponent, he won by technical falls and then downed Greg Mizutani from Schurr of Montebello in the semis, 19-5. Vasquez scored some early points in the final against Clovis sophomore Jason Williams and went on for a 7-2 victory. Only nine others in the history of the state meet have even won three individual crowns.

Girls: Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood

Wiley-Gatewood had two terrific outings last week to lead the undefeated Knights to the CIF Southern Section Div. I-AA title. First, in a 80-76 victory over Long Beach Wilson in the semifinals, she finished with a game-high 30 points. The super soph, despite battling painful shin splints and a stress fracture in her foot, then knocked down 20 in a 53-50 win over previously unbeaten Long Beach Poly. Wiley-Gatewood scored six of those points during the last two minutes of the game.
