Souths Hills RB Hopes for Strong Season

Last season South Hills high school of West Covina started out slow but rebounded at the right time to win five in a row and make it to the CIF Division VII championship game where they lost to West Covina.  With numerous returning starters including Tobi Umodu, Brian Slover and Fred Glaster the Huskies hope to make a run at a title this season. Another of the returning players is RB Marquies Winbush.  Last season Winbush rushed for over 1,100 yards.


PrepCA: What is your favorite thing about playing high school football?

Marquies Winbush: Competition and being with all my friends.


PrepCA: What is your official height and weight?

Marquies Winbush: 5'8 180 pounds.


PrepCA: What is your greatest football memory?

Marquies Winbush: Last year against San Gabriel I had a touchdown run of 70 yards.


PrepCA: What are your personal goals for the upcoming season?

Marquies Winbush: Win playoffs and win another CIF ring. 


PrepCA: How are you preparing for the upcoming season? Will you attend any camps this summer? Have you gone to any combines? 

Marquies Winbush: I went to the USC and UCLA combines.  Working out, running, doing everything I can to get ready.


PrepCA: What aspect of your game have you really worked hard to improve? What area would you like to keep improving on?

Marquies Winbush: Speed and strength.


PrepCA: Who are some of your teammates that people need to watch out for?

Marquies Winbush: RB/LB Fred Glaster, DE Tobi Umodu, DE/TE Brain Slover and QB Kevin Mort.  We have a good team coming back next year.


PrepCA: Name one teammate you really respect.

Marquies Winbush: RB/LB Fred Glaster.


PrepCA: Who is currently recruiting you? Do you have any offers yet?

Marquies Winbush: I have letters from UTEP, Nebraska and I have a couple of letters from UCLA and Idaho State.  I do not have any offers yet.  UCLA, UTEP and Nebraska are probably my favorites.


PrepCA: Of the schools that are recruiting you which one seems most interested.

Marquies Winbush: Probably Idaho State.


PrepCA: Who is the best player you ever played against?

Marquies Winbush: The running back from Westminster. (Carlos Brooks, rushed for 1,900 yards last season including 201 yards in a playoff loss to South Hills)


PrepCA: Name one team who you really respect and why?

Marquies Winbush: I respect all the teams we play against.


PrepCA: What other sports do you play?

Marquies Winbush: Track.  (Marquies has a personal best of 10.87 in the 100 meters and 22.02 in the 200 meters.)


PrepCA: What are your best max lifts in the bench, squat, power clean and 40 yard dash?

Marquies Winbush: 275 bench, 405 squat and 4.47 hand timed forty.


PrepCA: How do you think your coach would describe you as a player?

Marquies Winbush: Very talented.


PrepCA: Who is your favorite pro athlete?

Marquies Winbush: Barry Sanders


PrepCA: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? Who did you receive it from?

Marquies Winbush: Do not let anyone ever tell you no. Do not let anyone tell you can't accomplish something.
