State Athletes of the Week

He knocks 'em out and she knocks 'em down, which is why we went with Pacific Grove's Trevor Howell and Artesia's Brittney Thomas as our latest State Athletes of the Week.

State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Trevor Howell

(Pacific Grove)

The slugging catcher stayed hot with two home runs in the Breakers' win last week over Calaveras of San Andreas. In his first game of this week Howell was walked twice but came up in the sixth in a tie score and had to be pitched to. He homered as P.G. went on to win, 8-3. The three homers gave him a whopping nine already this season and put his career total at 37. He is two shy of the NorCal career record and 11 off the state career record.

Girls: Brittney Thomas

(Artesia, Lakewood)

Thomas poured in a game-high 31 points, including seven three-pointers, as the Pioneers (25-5) defeated Porterville Granite Hills 79-58 in CIF South Div. III playoff action. Thomas came back later in the week with 32 points in a 68-54 second round victory over San Diego University. The senior sharpshooter was part of a Div. III state championship team as a sophomore at Bishop Montgomery of Torrance. She hopes to lead her team past Bishop Montgomery in this week's regional finals.
