State Athletes of the Week

It's time to forget the hoopster and start giving more props to spring sports competitors. This week, we tip our hat to a heavy hitter from one of the state's best baseball teams and to a top-notch pitcher from one of the state's best softball teams.

State Athletes of the Week

Cody Haerther (Chaminade, West Hills)

Standout third baseman who's headed to UC Irvine went 4-for-4, including three homers, and had eight RBI, while teammate Joey Wachs went 5-for-5 with four doubles in a 25-0 thrashing of Inglewood Morningside. Haether again went 4-for-4 and had two RBI as Chaminade pounded out a 13-4 win over Kennedy of Granada Hills.

Lisa Dodd (Mira Mesa, San Diego)

In five pitching starts so far, this standout junior has gone 5-0 and has allowed only one unearned run. In her first 36 innings, she whiffed 60 batters and walked just five. Dodd also started the week with a .469 batting average. The most impressive outing for Dodd, a Student Sports preseason All-American, has been a two-hit shutout vs. Torrey Pines and its ace pitcher, Erin Snyder.
