Marin Catholic Girls and Horizon Boys Roll

The Div IV Boys and Girls State Championship games were both decided early as the Marin Catholic girls and Horizon boys squads won going away at the Arco Arena in Sacramento.

Div IV Girls:

Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 66, St. Bernard 48 (Playa del Rey)

Balanced scoring was the key to many Marin Catholic victories this season and that was again the case against St. Bernard. The Wildcats were led by point guard Adrienne Payne with 15 points. Nickie Warren added 14 points, Brooke Smith had 13 points and 11 rebounds, Casey Lockwood had 11 points and Lauren Nester chipped in with 10 points.

St. Bernard trailed by just two, 30-28, at halftime but Marin Catholic's steady passing and superior rebounding became too much in the second half. St. Bernard's leading scorers were Alexis Kendrick with 15 points but on just 5-23 shooting and Shannon Clay with 13 points.

Div IV Boys:

Horizon (San Diego) 78, Valley Christian (San Jose) 45

This game didn't project to be a close one and it wasn't as Horizon led 22-5 in the first quarter. The Panthers received 23 points and 14 rebounds from senior forward Nate Carter and 22 points from junior guard Ryan Read.

Valley Christian only had two players in double figures, Marcus Martinez and Joe Calderon, each with 13 points. Horizon coach Zach Jones said the Panthers were motivated throughout the season after an 80 foot full court heave eliminated them from the regional playoffs last season.

"The next day after that game, these guys committed themselves to this goal," Jones said. "The only thing I had to do was stay out of the way."
