State Athletes of the Week

As we continue to switch from winter to spring mode, top honors from accomplishments during the week of March 18-23 go to a high jumper from San Diego and a red-hot softball pitcher from the Central Valley.

State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Keno White

(Rancho Bernardo, San Diego)

It didn't take long for California to have a seven-foot high jumper this spring as Rancho Bernardo's White reached the magical mark in a dual meet last week. White became just the fourth high jumper in San Diego Section history to clear seven feet. He also had a mark of 47-5 in the triple jump n the same meet. White can stretch himself far as a long jumper, too. Combined with brother Deun White, Rancho Bernardo will be a threat to take a team title at this year's CIF state championships.

Girls: Brittney Tachara

(East Union, Manteca)

Tachara pitched her fourth no-hitter of the season for the Lancers in a 2-0 win over Oakdale. More significantly, it also was her second straight perfect game and puts her name into the state record book. The all-time best of three straight perfect games has been accomplished just three times, the last in 2000 by Fresno Bullard's Marissa Marzan. Anyone who does two, like Tachara, goes in the state book. She's now on the same list as softball greats Lisa Fernandez and Michelle Granger.
