Player Spotlight: Mike Cook

Interview with San Clemente Quarterback

QB Mike Cook led San Clemente HS to a 10-3 record and a playoff appearance. He was a threat in the air and on the ground. With another solid season, look for Mike to get some D1 attention. What were your stats from last season?
Mike Cook:
1300 yards passing 600 yards rushing 11TDs, 4 rushing and 6 INTs.

PrepCA: What is your official height and weight?
6'2'' 195 pounds.

PrepCA: What is your greatest football memory?
Beating Chino in the quarterfinals last year .

PrepCA: What are your goals for the upcoming season?
Get to the CIF finals.

PrepCA: How did you prepare for the upcoming season?
Tons of weightlifting, speed training, throwing and film.

PrepCA: What aspect of your game have you really worked hard to improve? What area would you like to keep improving on?
Going into last season I worked hard to improve my explosiveness which ended up in me having a lot of success running the ball. I would love to continuously improve my field awareness and vision.

PrepCA: Who are some of your teammates that people need to watch out for?
Kennan Cox 6'3 1/2'' 240 (DT/OL) he has got a good work ethic and can really dominate people. He is being recruited by a lot of big name schools UCLA, Utah, Fresno State. Max Swann (WR) committed to U of San Diego. He's the smartest receiver I have ever played with and his football knowledge allows us a lot of on-the-run adjustments. Tavaurus Abram (WR) is only going to a junior. He is a great deep threat and most talented receiver. Eric Sawall LB/Slot receiver is a stud with great hands. Josh Ferrel 6'2'' 235 RB, quick and has awesome hands.

PrepCA: What are your goals regarding playing football in college?
I know I can play division 1AA ball but if I have a solid season I'll get a chance to play D1. I've got the size, skills and the speed, its just a matter of finding the right school.

PrepCA: Who is currently recruiting you? Do you have any offers yet?
I have a verbal offer from the University of San Diego. I am getting lots of attention from Oregon, Stanford, Air Force, SDSU, UNLV, Harvard, Utah, Colorado, Cornell and Nevada.

PrepCA: Would you consider staying in state to play in college?
I am open to any program that fits my playing style and if it happens to be in California that's great.

PrepCA: What would your top 5 college choices be?
Oregon, Nevada, Colorado, Harvard and UNLV

PrepCA: Who is the best player you ever played against? Why?
Nick Reed @ Mission Viejo HS, I think he is going to Ohio State. He's big, fast, and dominant.

PrepCA: Name one opponent who you really respect and why?
Mike: Scott McKnight
from Tesoro, I went to a lot of camps this summer and had a chance to throw to him quite a bit. The kid works his tail off and is a good athlete and a nice guy.

PrepCA: What other sports do you play?
I'm planning on playing basketball this coming season.

PrepCA: What are your best lifts in the bench, squat, power clean and 40?
Bench: 270, Squat: 320 and Clean: 275. At the North County passing league tournament I ran a 4.56 timed by two SPARQ trainers and a 4.06 shuttle.

PrepCA: How do you think your coach would describe you as a player?

PrepCA: Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Steve Young.

PrepCA: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
Just have fun.

PrepCA: Tell us what can we expect from your team this season?
: A very athletic team with a lot of talented players. We have booked our toughest schedule in years but I'm confident we'll win a lot of football games.

PrepCA: What can a college program expect from you as a player?
: A dedicated football player who'll be fully committed to its program.
