Each week we will look at some of the top prep football performers in Northern California. The great thing about the early report is getting to know players who may be starting for the first time or on the verge of breakout seasons.
This week some new quarterbacks got a hold of the offense for the first time and shined. 6'4 190 pound Tyler Lantrip of Carmichael Jesuit passed for over 300 yards and had 4 TDs while leading his Marauders to a 28-14 win over St. Mary's. 6'5 Los Gatos QB Danny Sullivan lit up Aragon for over 160 and 3 TDs primarily in the first half while leading his team to a 41-0 win. Vallley Christian Senior QB Dante Perez went a perfect 8 for 8 in his team's 42-7 win over Milpitas.
Along with the quarterbacks, some running backs to watch had big performances. Roy Helu a junior from San Ramon high had 170 yards and 2 TDs in his team's win. Another junior runner who had a big night was Daniel Johansen of Freedom High School in Oakley. Johansen ran for over 200 yards in a 35-6 win over Sunset High School. Maybe the most important running back this past weekend was Nick Huppe of Del Oro who had two scores and 255 tough yards in a 21-14 win over three time Division II section champion Oak Ridge.
On the defensive side of the ball there were some performances that helped teams bring home big wins. 5'11 200 pound Scott Baldwin had two interceptions to help his team stop Laguna Creek 10 – 0. Casa Grande's Colin Ryan, a junior, also had two picks in a close win over Novato. Big junior Rhett Ellison of St. Francis had 3 sacks helping his team limit Oak Grove to 10 points in a 21-10 win.
