State Athletes of the Week

This week's honors go to a boy who can jump high and a girl who can throw a discus a long way.

Boys: Teak Wilburn
Defending state champion in the high jump has shown so far he's going to be tough to dethrone and is one of the best nationally. Wilburn turned in a personal best in the high jump at last weekend's Oakland Relays as he went over the bar at 7 feet, 1/4 inch. He took over the state lead from Rancho Bernardo's Keno Williams, who has gone over 7-0 twice. Wilburn cleared 7-0 in his first meet of the year last month. The 7-0 1/4 mark also ties the CIF Northern Section record set in 1995 by Red Bluff's Michael Wilkens.

Girls: Rachel Varner
Varner was named the high school girls athlete of the meet at the Bob Mathias Fresno Relays last Saturday after setting a CIF Central Section record in the discus with a throw of 178 feet. The toss beat her nearest competitor by 30 feet and blasted the previous record of 176-10, set by Bakersfield's Melisa Weis in 1990. Varner also won the shot put with a personal-best of 48-feet, 2 -inches. Varner reportedly benches presses 330 pounds.
