Ryan plays middle linebacker in a 4-3 defense and I think this fits him for a variety of reasons. Ryan is an old school run stuffing middle backer. He is left to patrol the middle and relied upon to make tackles, which is exactly what he does. He is a solid tackler, plays downhill and with a good pad level. I especially like the way Ryan takes on blockers. He will attack the line of scrimmage and whether it is an OL or fullback, Ryan will attack the blocker with proper technique using his inside shoulder. He is pretty good at shedding blockers that do get contact but could improve in this area.
He is a willing hitter that will lay out to make the tackle and scrapes pretty well. He tackles well but on occasions ankle tackles but I think this is more of him trying to make a play versus just being sloppy. He also seems to play with very good intensity and will hit you.
He is better against the run than against the pass. He looked a little stiff out in pass coverage and did not play with great speed in getting to the edge. I feel speed may be his main weakness.
He also plays TE for Elk Grove but I do not see him as a division 1 prospect at this position.
Coulson is not a flashy player but
is a fundamentally sound player. He will not make a ton of plays behind the LOS
but can be counted on to make tackles up the gut. I firmly believe that middle
backer will be Ryan's college position. He currently has offers from
