State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Derek Simper

(San Marcos)

Tied a CIF San Diego Section record with 11 straight hits, but was not able to break it as a grounder to second snapped it last Friday vs. Poway. No problem for Simper. The next day he went 3-for-3 with two homers in a 20-9 win over Fallbrook. In his streak of 11 straight hits, Simper turned three of them into homers and three more into doubles.

Girls: Erin Sigala

(Notre Dame, Salinas)

Sigala pitched her second consecutive perfect game and eighth no-hitter of the season in a 2-0 triumph over Gilroy. She finished the week 5-0 counting games in the Monterey Bay League and at the Watsonville tourney. In those five games, Sigala not only had two perfect games but also two one-hitters and struck out 73 batters. Also in a game against Westmont of Campbell at the Watsonville tourney, Sigala went 2-for-2 as a batter with a grand slam and five RBI. She headed to UNLV on a full scholarship.
