State Athletes of the Week

Give Trey Ursich a pitch to hit, and the results might make you sick. Give Alison Yin the ball, and she'll make any offense stall.

State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Trey Ursich

(Mary Star, San Pedro)

Another slugger to watch down the stretch along with Camarillo's Delmon Young and Pacific Grove's Trevor Howell. Ursich went 3-for-5, with all three hits being homers, that accounted for five runs driven in, leading Mary Star to a 11-9 slugfest win over Cantwell of Montebello. Ursich now has 13 homers this season and 31 for his career. He is just a junior, so even if Howell breaks the state career mark of 46 set last year by Marian Catholic's Ismael Salas, it might not last long. Ursich ripped 16 homers last year as a sophomore while batting .543 and driving in 56 runs. This year, heading into this week, he's been walked 19 times.

Girls: Alison Yin

(Foothill, Tustin)

Yin's transfer and move from small-school Westridge of Pasadena has given the Knights the stopper in the circle they need to go along with their potent offense. Although Foothill's hope of being No. 1 in the nation has dimmed with three losses, the Knights had a strong week, first by turning back Canyon of Anaheim, 2-0, in a Century League showdown and then rolling past Santa Ana Valley, 9-0. Yin gave up three hits against Canyon and came back to strike out 18 in a one-hitter against Santa Ana Valley.
