Trackin' the state's top performers

High jump standout Teak Wilburn of Chico will miss the rest of the season with an injury. Plus, league meets begin the trek toward the CIF state meet.

Teak Wilburn's quest to be the all-time state leader in the high jump is on hold. The Chico High senior severely injured his plant foot in a dual meet last week.

Ligament damage was diagnosed in the ankle and he'll be out for the rest of the season. Wilburn recently went over the bar at 7-4 1/4 to take over the national lead and only needed another 1/2 inch to break the record of 7-4 1/2 set in in 1974 by Maurice Crumby from Balboa of San Francisco.

Elsewhere in track: League meets, the first step athletes take toward qualifying for the CIF state championships that will be held May 31-June 1 at Cerritos College, began to be held last week.

The Moore League is always one of the biggies and this year's meet at Long Beach City College produced two new state seasonal bests.

Ashley Freeman of Long Beach Wilson got one of them in the 400 with a clocking of 53.96. She's been more known in previous seasons as an 800 runner (she won the Moore League crown in that event, too), but this year she's really come on in the shorter distance.

The other new state best, also a national best, was from the Long Beach Poly girls 4x100 relay team. Led by nationally-ranked sprinters Shalonda Solomon and Jasmine Lee, the Jackrabbits clocked 45.33 and look like they could threaten the state and national record of 44.70 set in 1997 by Playa del Rey St. Bernard.

More on Poly: Coach Don Norford's program is nationally-ranked in just about every relay event. According to the latest lists compiled by Jack Shepard and Mike Kennedy of Track and Field News, Poly's girls are No. 1 in the nation in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400. They are No. 4 in the 4x800 and No. 5 in the 800 sprint medley. The Poly boys are No. 2 nationally in the 4x200, No. 4 in the 4x400 and No. 5 in the 4xMile.

But don't start counting on that boys-girls team title sweep at the state meet. Bakersfield and Taft of Woodland Hills don't have the depth of Poly, but by the time the state meet rolls around a lot of the depth has been weeded out and a team needs one or two major point producers.

Bakersfield certainly has that potentially with Thomas Mack in the hurdles and Blake Mackey in the 400. On the girls side, J.W. North of Riverside could make up for a lack of relay strength with Chaunte Howard in several events plus Tracee Thomas in the 400 and 300 hurdles.
