He had a hot bat and she pitched another terrific game to keep her team in this week's state top 20.

State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Josiah Brand

A few weeks ago, this honor went to Derek Simper of San Marcos for tying a CIF San Diego Section record in baseball with 11 consecutive hits. Well, since Brand just broke that record, it's only fair to go with him for this week. The senior shortstop ended last week with a streak of 12 straight hits in 12 official at-bats and extended it early this week to 13 before it finally ended. Brand's hot hitting began in the second game of a doubleheader against Carlsbad on Saturday, April 27. He had a walk, a single and two doubles, The next game was against El Camino of Oceanside on May 1 and Brand went 3-for-3 with a single and two doubles. Two days later, he had a single, walk, double and single in a game against state-ranked La Costa Canyon. And even though Fallbrook lost again to La Costa Canyon on Saturday, Brand kept going with a double, single, hit by pitch and another double. A streak of reaching base in 15 straight at bats ended in the first inning of this week's game against San Marcos, but Brand had a sacrifice fly and the hitting streak was then extended to 13 with a single in the third. The streak ended when Brand struck out in his next at-bat.

Girls: Omaira Estremera

Estremera pitched a perfect game, striking out 13, as the Bulldogs whitewashed Modesto 7-0. Omaira improved to 18-0 with 16 shutouts, and she has racked up a total of 216 strikeouts. She led Ceres to a 21-1 record to start the week, which was good enough to land the Bulldogs at No. 18 in the state top 20.
