Northern California Report

A Look At Section Championships

This week's Northern California Report puts the exclamation mark on a great season as the remaining champions were crowned.  As always, big players make big plays but teams win championships. Here is a quick look at top players in the finals.  Even after the season is over, keep an eye out the for the Northern California Report as we keep you informed on next year's top players and the latest recruiting news.

*The talented Bullard squad's run for a championship came to a halt as they faced Bakersfield in a tight ball game. Bakersfield QB/DB Phillip Thomas made crucial plays on both sides of the ball in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter.  As Bullard was driving to take the lead, Thomas intercepted a pass and two plays later took of on an eighty-eight yard sprint to seal the 35-28 win for the Championship.  Thomas was helped by teammate Terrell Young who ran for 177 yards.  In the last two weeks Young has averaged right at eighteen yards a carry.

*Lemoore won its first title in school history as they defeated Yosemite 48 to 16. QB,  Cory Billingsley had over 300 yards offense and had a hand in five scores.

*Junior RB Ryan Mathews of Bakersfield West banged away at the Tulare defense to the tune of 245 rushing yards.  In so doing, he was able to limit the touches of explosive Tulare QB Emannuel Lewis, helping to bring home the 53-28 victory and championship.

*Nevada Union did not come away empty handed in this years section championship.  Last year the Miners lost a heart breaker to St.Mary's, but this year they left no doubt dominating all aspects of the game while beating Tracy West 46-7.

*Another team leaving no doubt was Immanuel as they defeated Chowchilla 40 to 7.  In the win for the Central Section DIV title, Tim Cowdrey caught two TDs, kicked a couple of field goals and for good measure intercepted a pass on defense.
