State Athletes of the Week
Boys: Omar Padilla
Let's hear it for a rare small school honoree from the outer reaches of the CIF North Coast Section. Padilla did it again for Tomales, pitching all seven innings while hitting a single, double and triple for three RBI as hot Tomales defeated St. Vincent of Petaluma, 9-5. Last week, the senior right-hander also hurled a no-hitter in a big win over Middletown. He's also an outstanding shortstop and soccer player.
Girls: Julia Pitts
Is there a better three-sport athlete in the nation? Pitts, who was all-area in volleyball and averaged 23 ppg in basketball, is having an exceptional spring as a track athlete. She improved her time in the 300 hurdles in last week's CIF Southern Section Div. II prelims to 42.88, which is just off the state lead of 42.58 held by Long Beach Poly's Tunisia Johnson. Pitts also was first in her heat in the 400 in 56.27, cleared 5-4 in the high jump and helped the Saxons move on in the 4x400 relay as they clocked 3:56.97. Pitts has a best clearance in the high jump this year of 5-9 and has dipped below 55 seconds in the 400.
