Game Preview: Newbury Park @ Rio Mesa

Newbury Park travels to Rio Mesa this Friday to take on WR Josh Harrison and the Spartans...

Newbury Park Panthers (Newbury Park, Ca.),  Marmonte League (Currently 1-0, In 2005 they were 8-4 and lost to St. Bonaventure (Ventura, CA) in the 2nd round State Playoffs L 13-49) @ Rio Mesa Spartans (Oxnard, Ca.) Pacific View League (Currently 1-0, 2005 8-5 and also lost to St. Bonaventure (Ventura, CA) State Playoffs L 7-28 in the 3rd round)

These two teams played last year with Newbury Park winning 54-13 with 23 completions in 25 attempts for 392 yard and 6 tds.  Wow!  They only ran 18 times for 89 yards with 1 td.  Newbury Park's Josh Baker had 11 catches for 219 yards & Jordan Cameron 10 catches for 159 yards.  Rio Mesa had 34 runs for 118 yards, 5 completions in 10 passing attempts.  Division I prospect Malachi Lewis had 13 runs for 64 yards.  Newbury Park lets you know they are going to throw the ball and they throw it.  In their opening win over Camarillo (CA) 21-14, they had 41 throws with 2 ints and 2 tds with 23 Runs.  But make no mistake about it this will be a tough game.

 

New and Returning Playmakers:

Newbury Park will showcase 6'3" 180 Colby Cameron with 23 completions in 41 attempts (56 %) for 255 yards 2ints 2 tds.  6'1" 180 WR Scott Takeguma had 7catches for 69 yards (9.8 avg) and had 5 Tackles.  Returning 5'11" 185 WR Anthony Leonardi had 6 catches for 47 yards and 5 Tackles.  6'1" 190 WR Jason Andersen had 3 catches for 77 yards (26 avg.) 1 td.  6'1" 215 RB Chance Flaaten had 2 catches for 25 yards (12.5 avg.), along with 8 Tackles and 1 Int.  6'1" 175 WR David Gru had 2 catches for 20 (10.0 avg) and a td.  5'11" 180 RB Brian Koenig added 16 runs for 65 yards with 1 td.  The panthers had many tacklers including 6'0" 200 LB Ron Tatham with 13T,  5'11 220 DL Travis Fenstermacher 7T, 6'0" 210 DL Mike Ferrari had 6 Tackles and 2 Sacks, 5'9" 165 DB Derik Taylor with 2 Sacks.  The line will be challenged this year to run the ball with moderate size.  They are lead by 6'4" 270 Nick Cwayna & 6'3" 245 Bryan Batongmalaque.  Newberry is built to throw the ball.

 

Rio Mesa, on the other hand, brings back Division I RB in 6'4" 215 Malachi Lewis who ran 17 times for 129 yards (7.6 avg.) 2 tds and 7 Tackles.  This returning dynamic player put up 308 runs for 2187 yards (7.1 avg) and 24 tds.  This is a player that is going to get his yards, so the others must be stopped.  The others include Returning 6'0" 175 QB Shane Austin who last week had 16 completions in 25 attempts (64% avg) for 310 yards 1 int 3 tds.  In 2005 Shane had 52 completions in 81 attempts (64%) for 850 3 ints & 5 tds.  5'11" 170 WR Josh Harrison had 3 catches for 118 yards (39.3 avg.) 2tds, while in 2005 he had 13 catches for 193 yards (14.8 avg.) 1 td.  6'0" 215 FB Ina Liaina had 2 catches for 36 yards and 5 Tackles.  5'8" 185 RB Jerell Thomas also had 8 runs for 50 yards (6.2 avg.) 1 td.  5'11" 170 WR Jordyn Aupiu had 5 catches for 84 yards (16.8 avg.) 1 td.  5'11" 160 WR Jeremy Shiffman 3 catches for 46 yards (15.3 avg.).  So you can see that Rio Mesa has an extremely strong & experienced group of skilled players.  Defensively the tacklers include 6'0" 200 LB Quinton Greenlaw 15T, 5'9" 170 Johnny Cazares 9 Tackles and 2Sks.  5'6" 160 LB Fernando Jr. Raigoza 8T, 5'8" 170 DB Steve Gagua with 5 Tackles and an Int.  Rio Mesa has a line built for running with 6'2" 290 Joshua Martin, 6' 2" 290 Chris Coronado, 6'0" 285 Mark Cortes and 3 260 pounders Christopher Lopez, Antonio Hosford and Jake Herrera.
