It can be hard for a young football team to play well after a big win. Colony High of Ontario found this out Friday night against the Fontana Steelers. Coming off a 42-16 win over Jurupa Valley in their opening game, and going against the Fontana Steelers who have lost twenty-one straight games, the Titans played a seasaw first quarter with the Steelers and had to catch a big break before 'righting the ship' and moving on to a 56 to 14 win.
Things opened well for Colony as they scored in four plays on there initial drive. One could almost read the thoughts in some of the Colony players minds. "Colony gets the ball, Colony scores. Colony gets the ball back, Colony scores again." However Fontana had some different thoughts. They answered back with a thirteen play drive to even the score. Yes the drive was helped by three major Colony penalities but it was also hindered by three dropped passes by Steeler receivers. Steeler quarterback, Reggie Sparrow ( Jr. 6'2" 200) was 4 for 17 but easily could have been 12 for 17.
On the kick off, things looked like they might be going from bad to worse as Colony fumbled the return. But the ball got kicked forward and was finally knocked out of bounds on the Colony 35. Colony quarterback Jeff Ginolfi (Jr. 6'2 , 195) then led the Titans to their second touchdown. On 3td and 13 from the Steeler 31, Ginolfi stood in against an all out Steeler blitz and hit Maurice Shaw (Sr. 6'3" 182) on a slant. Shaw scored on a nice catch and run.
Fontana was not done. David Dash (Fr. 5'7" 155) took the kick off back to the Colony 17 yard line. Two plays later the Steelers tied the score on Dash's 4 yd run.
Colony killed their next drive with penalities and punted the ball to the Steeler 10 yard line. Three plays into the the second quarter the game turned on a Fontana mistake. The Steeler punter dropped the snap and Colony's Kevin Rogers recovered in the end zone.
Colony was able to force a Steeler punt and drive the ball for another score to make it 28 to 14. The Titans went on to score the next 36 points. Shaw had four TD's on the night. Ginolfi was 5 for 8 and 146 yds. RB James Hutchins (Sr. 5'9" 170) ran for 103 yds on 10 carries and Omar Bolden (Sr. 5'11" 195 ) had 89 yds on 9 attempts.
Titan coach, Anthony Rice said after the game, "You have to understand that Fontana was hungry. They came out hard and didn't quit."
When asked if his team had learned anything, Rice said "I hope so." Rice said
that he was sure that the Titans were now a better team then when they started
the game. They had better be, because their next game is against Alta Loma which
shut out AB Miller and has two wins on the season over quality
