2008 Intorduction: Nate Van Weelden

Nate Van Weelden, a 6-1 junior point guard from Valley Christian, was impressive last Monday at the MLK Classic...

Nate Van Weelden, 6-1 JR PG Chandler (Ariz.) Valley Christian.

Monday (MLK Classic) we had our first look at Valley Christian playmaker, Nate Van Weelden.  He is just a junior but with continued development on his outside shot he just might be Valley Christians first Division I recruit in School history (basketball).

He has a great feel for the game.  Van Weelden is a pure point guard with excellent vision and passing ability.  Although his shot needs work, he is a LM follow and somebody who needs to be watched over the next year.

Defensively he can guard bigger athletes with his strength and lateral quickness.  Smart and rarely makes a mistake.

He sees plays developing on the court before anybody else and makes great decisions with the ball.  Unlike the current trend of shoot-first point guards, he looks to pass first.  In transition, he pushes the ball and will not force the action. A true leader on the court.

He can knock down the 15-17ft shot, but like we said, he needs to really become a consistent threat from beyond the arc.  If he can do that over the next year, Van Weelden could elevate his stock even higher (MM Level).

Nate is comparable to New Mexico Bound Mickey McConnell (Dobson High School).
