Here's the preseason top 20 overall for football that have been compiled to compliment our TV show "Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area," which will be shown on Sundays at 4:30 p.m. on KRON TV, Channel 4, San Francisco. The first show of the new school year is this week.

All teams listed with 2001 win-loss record. These rankings for the 2002 season will be for teams from the CIF Central Coast Coast, CIF North Coast Section (only as far north as Mendocino county) plus teams from Napa County and Solano County of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section.

If you go by this list, the toughest league in the Bay Area this year will be the East Bay Athletic League with Monte Vista, Foothill, San Ramon Valley, etc. But preleague results will determine that more than rankings, and don't be surprised if the toughest league turns out to be either the brand new Tri County League of the CCS (Palma, Salinas, Hollister, etc.), the usually-tough WCAL of the CCS (Bellarmine, St. Francis, Mitty, etc.) or the Monticello Empire League of the Sac-Joaquin (Vallejo, Bethel, Vintage, etc.)......

Teams that have the most rebuilding to do seem to be Palma, Los Gatos, Miramonte and Oak Grove. Of those three, we kept Palma ranked very high since the Chieftains are two-time defending CCS Div. I champs and won in last year's final in such an impressive manner over Mitty.....
