Poly runs away from Kahuku

Long Beach Poly's speed was evident as the Jackrabbits jumped out to a 28-2 halftime lead and never looked back in a 42-16 win over Kahuku in the first game of the First Hawaiian Bank Football Classic.

Long Beach Poly (Calif.) scored the first four times it had the ball and coasted into the half with a 28-2 lead over Kahuku (Hawaii) en route to an easy victory Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.

The game served as a precursor to the St. Louis (Hawaii) vs. De La Salle (Calif.) showdown later Saturday night.

Poly scored two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters, building a 42-2 lead before settling on a 42-16 victory. The outcome ended Kahuku's 26-game win streak.

Leon Jackson threw a pair of TD passes -- a 56-yarder to Derrick Jones and a 22-yarder to Lorenzo Bursey -- in the first half. Kahuku avoided a shutout in the final minute of the half by tackling a Poly player in the end zone for a safety.

Bursey gave Poly a 7-0 lead on a 7-yard run midway through the first quarter.

Jackson's first TD pass gave the Jackrabbits a 14-0 lead.

Jackson then hit Bursey on a 22-yard TD on the team's first play of the second quarter for a 21-0 advantage.

Jabar Morris then scored on a TD run, giving Poly a 28-0 lead less than three minutes into the second quarter.

After the scoring outburst, the team's traded turnovers the rest of the half with Kahuku finally cashing for a safety one play after throwing an interception.

Jones started the second half for Poly by returning the kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown and a 35-2 lead. Only a few minutes later, Bursey scored for the third time as the Jackrabbits went up 42-2.

Kahuku scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to make the score a bit more respectable.
