State Athletes of the Week

Every week, we choose one boy and one girl from among the hundreds of thousands who compete in California prep sporting events each week. You're all winners for being involved. Here's just two who did something a little out of the ordinary.

Selected by

Solomon Jones (Inglewood)

It if wasn't for Solomon, there's no doubt Inglewood would have lost in its game last week to Upland. As it was, Jones keyed a 28-26 win by going 98 yards for a TD on an interception return, 95 yards for a TD on a kickoff return, and finally 76 yards for a TD on a reception. "Man, right now, he's surpassing all of his expectations," Inglewood coach Kevin Moore told the South Bay Daily Breeze of his senior standout. "He's making claims to being not only one of the best players in the South Bay, but also in all of the CIF. He could be one of the most dangerous players around."

Girls: Ruth Graham

Gunn High (Palo Alto)

The senior stamped herself as one of the top runners in the West for this year by winning the individual girls race last weekend at the Iolani Invitational in Honolulu. Graham, who was the 2001 California Div. II state champion, battled through wilting tropical heat to win her 3.1 mile-race in 19:48.4. She beat a strong girls field that included second-place finisher Kit Ziegle from Bingham High of Provo, Utah, and third-place finisher Julie Baird from Eisenhower High of Yakima, Wash. Graham also was the California Central Coast Section 3200 meter champ last spring on the track and was one of the leading qualifiers for the CIF state track meet.
