State Athletes of the Week

We look long and hard every week to find that one boy and that one girl who captured our attention the most. This time, that turned out to be a grid-hoop standout from Redding and a volleyball blocker from San Jose. (photo by Gregg Benson)

Boys: Brody Angley
(Enterprise, Redding)

How does 42.5 yards per carry sound? For Angley, a junior who is one of the best grid-hoopers in the state, that was his average after he rampaged for 340 yards on just eight carries in Enterprise's 74-20 win over Chico. Angley scored on runs of 50, 85, 69 and 76 yards and for good measure threw in a 73-yard touchdown off an interception return. The 74 points set a school record for Enterprise, which is 4-0 and this week meets up with 4-0 Pleasant Valley of Chico in one of the state's top games.

Girls: Christina Kirk
(Mitty, San Jose)

The 6-1 senior, who was not a big cog in Mitty's run to the Div. I state title a year ago, proved over the weekend that she will be a big reason if the Monarchs repeat. At the prestigious Durango Fall Classic volleyball tournament, Kirk was an immense presence in the middle, putting up a huge block that frustrated Long Beach Wilson's superstar outside hitter Cynthia Barboza in the Saturday evening double final, and hitting the quick sets straight down with authority for points and side outs. Because of her efforts, not only did Mitty come from the loser's bracket to win the tourney, Kirk also was named tourney MVP.
