State Athletes of the Week

Boys winner is a dandy from Sacramento who almost rushed for 400 yards in one game. Girls honoree gets it done in the middle for Newport Harbor volleyball team.

Boys: Randy Bacon

(Florin, Sacramento)

Get ready for all those "Bacon Sizzles" headlines. In this case, it will be for Randy, a 5-10, 180-pound running back from a school that hasn't had much football success in its still young history. Bacon turned heads last spring at the Stanford Nike Camp and is backing it up so far with a delectable fall. In a 42-19 win last week vs. Sheldon of Sacramento, Bacon racked up 382 yards on 27 carries and scored on runs of 65, 42, 12 and 40 yards. Bacon also now has nearly 900 yards rushing for the season and seems well on his way to 2,000.

Girls: Kristin McClune

(Newport Harbor, Newport Beach)

The Sailors played in the prestigious Nike Invitational last weekend in Chicago and led by McClune came home with a strong third-place showing. McClune was named to the all-tournament team due to efforts like 12 kills vs. Pius XI of Milwaukee, 20 kills vs. St. Ignatius of Chicago and 13 kills vs. Wahlert of Dubuque, Iowa, in the third-place match. Newport's only loss in the event was to national powerhouse Assumption of Louisville, Ky. McClune is a 6-3 middle blocker who has committed to Pepperdine and in August was named as one of Student Sports Magazine's hot 100 national recruits.
