GSP Players of the Week: Week 13

With the playoffs around the state winding down, a pair of Golden State athletes had huge games in monumental playoff wins for their respective schools, earning Week 13 Player of the Week honors...

Daniel Cannon of San Francisco Archbishop Riordan

San Francisco Archbishop Riordan used a big day from all-everything player Daniel Cannon to earn the CIF-Central Coast Div. II Medium School title in a 54-19 win over Morgan Hill Live Oak.

Cannon won NorCal Player of the Week honors after scoring two touchdowns through the air (a 40-yarder and a 38-yarder), threw a 27-yard pass for a touchdown and scored on a 37-yard fumble recovery defensively.

All told, Cannon had six catches for 166 yards and nine tackles for Riordan. He ended his season with 66 receptions for 1,254 yards and 15 touchdowns and had 106 tackles with four interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Cierre Wood of Oxnard Santa Clara

Earning Player of the Week honors in SoCal was Oxnard Santa Clara's Cierre Wood, one of the elite juniors nationally.

In Santa Clara's 42-20 CIF semifinal victory over Cerritos Valley Christian, Wood continued his torrid pace, rushing for 327 yards and scoring all six Saints touchdowns including on a kickoff return and a punt return.

Wood amassed close to 500 all-purpose yards.

On the season, Wood has rushed for 2,404 yards in only 12 games, has scored 41 touchdowns, and has over 3,000 all-purpose yards this season.

This weekend, Wood will lead the Saints into the CIF-Mid Valley Division finals against Bishop Diego in a game at Moorpark College.
