State Athletes of the Week

This time we go non-football for top-notch cross country runner to go with one of the state's top two sport standouts.

Boys: Michael Haddan

(Woodbridge, Irvine)

This junior is without question one of the most promising young distance runners in the nation. Haddan first gained wide notice last spring when he won the 800-meter race at the CIF state track meet. Last week, at the Orange County cross country championships, Haddan set a course record that had stood for 18 years. He won the sweepstakes race in 14:37 over the three mile layout and chopped off eight seconds from the record time of 14:45 set in 1984 by William Feliciano of Cypress. Haddon won his race by 13 seconds over second-place finisher David Napper of Cypress.

Girls: Sharon Day

(Costa Mesa)

Sticking with the theme of being a top track athlete as well as being from Orange County, this seems like a good week to pick Day. She's a top volleyball player as well as being the defending CIF state track champion in the high jump. Day won that meet with a clearance of 5-11 and uses those hops for good use for Costa Mesa's volleyball team. The squad won twice last week to improve to 7-0 in league play. Day had a team-high 12 kills in a 15-6, 15-5, 15-10 win over Saddleback of Santa Ana and had 16 kills as well as six blocks in a 6-15, 15-5, 16-14, 15-11 triumph over Ocean View of Huntington Beach.
