State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Desmond Reed

(Temple City) Football

Dazzling football player is making versatility his middle name. Reed (5-9, 180) was just moved to running back by coach Mike Mooney and is still making plays all over the field. In a 49-14 win last weekend over South Pasadena, Reed rushed for 110 yards on 14 carries and scored three TDs, went 90 yards for a TD on the opening kickoff and brought back a pair of fumbles for TDs, one that measured 95 yards and another that was 41 yards. Reed's six touchdowns set a school record. Oh, and by the way, he also had a pair of interceptions on defense. Reed had two interceptions the week before and now has a reported 31 for his career. Three more and Reed will tie the reported state record of 34 career interceptions set in 1971 by Paul Kinne of Paso Robles. Reed also has 13 punt or kickoff return TDs in his career, which also may be listed as a state record. That category as yet doesn't exist in the record book, but 13 would sure be a good place to start.

Girls: Olivia Thompson

(Casa Grande, Petaluma) Soccer

We always try to pick a fall soccer player from the Redwood Empire at some point during the fall and Thompson seems like a strong choice for this week. Girls soccer is played in the winter for most of the schools in the CIF, but it's been a fall sport in some hotbeds and the Redwood Empire qualifies as that. Thompson is a goalie for the Gauchos and last week notched a pair of shutouts. The first shutout was by 1-0 over Analy of Sebastopol and gave Casa Grande a league title. Thompson also had a 1-0 shutout later in the week over Healdsburg. According to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, Thompson has a 3.5 GPA and has eight shutouts so far for the season.
