State Athletes of the Week

A monster outing by a football running back and a superb effort by one of the top prep girls golfers in the nation earns our highest praise from among the student-athletes at 1,100 schools in California.

State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Jake Pettengill

(Foothill, Palo Cedro) Football

The son of Foothill head coach Mark Pettengill has been among the state rushing and scoring leaders all year and should really shoot up those charts after what he did last Saturday night in the Cougars' wild 58-52 win over Chico. Pettengill carried 21 times for 455 yards and scored seven TDs. He tied the CIF Northern Section record with his seven TDs and became the fourth player in the state this season with seven TDs. Pettengill's rushing total ranks second best in the state for this season, just misses the section record by four yards but does make it at No. 13 on the all-time state list. Foothill improved its record to 6-3 overall heading into its last game of the regular season.

Girls: Kim McCready

(Union Mine, El Dorado) Golf

Despite taking bogeys on two of the first five holes, McCready pretty much aced the field during Monday's CIF/NCGA Northern California girls golf championship at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico. The senior wound up with a 2-under-par 70 and won the individual title by four shots over the next highest finisher, Antioch Deer Valley's Alexis Edwards. McCready, who already had won the Sac-Joaquin Section title this season, was a fourth-place finisher in last year's NorCal championships. She was among the top 20 in last summer's Junior World Championships in San Diego and has placed as high as second at the California Junior Girls State Championships. Kim carries a 3.89 GPA and according to the Mountain Democrat of Placerville has made a verbal commitment to the University of Oregon.
