State Athletes of the Week

Top honors from among the nearly 1,100 football-playing high schools in the state go out to a running back who certainly knows what it's like to score six TDs in a game and to one of the nation's hardest-hitting volleyball players.

State Athletes of the Week

Boys: Chase Twedell

(Valley Christian, Cerritos)

Chase was chased all over the field last weekend in Valley Christian's 49-7 win over Montclair Prep of Van Nuys and wound up with 33 carries for 276 yards and six TDs. Even though the game pitted two teams among the Div. IV state rankings, Twedell helped turned it into a rout. He scored six TDs in a game for the third time this season and put himself over the 5,000-yard mark for career rushing yards. Twedell now has 1,403 yards this season and 24 TDs. He had six TDs previously in games against Whittier Christian of La Habra and St. Bernard of Playa del Rey. Twedell is a 6-0, 185-pounder with a 3.85 GPA who clocked 4.51 in the 40-yard dash at the USC Nike Camp.

Girls: Rachell Johnson

(Torrey Pines, San Diego)

Less than a week after being named all-tourney at the California Challenge, Johnson sparkled in a key Palomar League match against Poway. The senior, who has committed to UCLA, hammered down four quick kills to get the match started and the Falcons went on to defeat Poway 15-10, 15-4, 15-0. The victory may not be enough for Torrey Pines to win its 11th straight league title, but it does stamp the Falcons as a team to beat in the upcoming San Diego Section and CIF Southern California regional playoffs. Johnson finished with 17 kills in the match. She is one of just two returning starters off last year's Torrey Pines team that played in the Division I state finals and was one of the highest ranked teams in the Student Sports FAB 50.
