There have been wild, shootout games before like the one last week between Lutheran of Orange and Kennedy of La Palma. Heck, even this year, there's been the 58-55 win by Royal of Simi Valley over Newbury Park and the 52-49 win by Agoura of Agoura Hills over Newbury Park.

But two facts put the Lutheran-Kennedy scorefest on a plane by itself.

First, neither team scored in the fourth quarter. It was 56-51 for Lutheran going into the final period and whether it was the offenses finally getting tired or the defenses finally waking up it was a 0-0 quarter, so Lutheran settled for the 56-51 win.

Second, the weather throughout most of the state last weekend was terrible. Mud bowls were the norm rather than the exception and prolific passing doesn't usually follow.

But prolific passing and receiving is exactly what happened for the Lancers and the Fighting Irish.

For Lutheran, quarterback Casey Whieldon completed 10 of 19 passes for 320 yards and six touchdowns. Five of his TD passes went to junior Anthony Vernaglia, who was the Orange County Register Boys Athlete of the Week. Vernaglia also finished with six catches for 224 yards.

For Kennedy, junior quarterback Robert Becker set school records for completions, attempts and yards and tied a school record for TD passes. Becker finished 29 of 45 for 419 yards and five TDs. Becker's favorite target was senior Blake Calabrese, who had 10 catches for 263 yards and one score.
