State Athletes of the Week
Boys: Chris LaValle
(Etiwanda, Rancho Cucamonga)
In a 42-18 victory by the Eagles over Upland that gave them a share of the Baseline League title, LaValle resembed a gazelle with 33 carries for 416 yards and three touchdowns. LaValle had TD runs of 45, 30 and 77 yards and finished four yards in front of the Inland Valley single-game record of 412 set in 2000 by DeAndre Belin from Bonita of La Verne. His total was initially reported at 407, but the school changed to the higher number after carefully reviewing game films. LaValle, whose previous single game best was 260 yards, ended the regular season with 1,578 yards and 15 TDs. The only bad news of the week for Etiwanda is that it lost a coin flip involving Claremont and Rancho Cucamonga and had to enter the CIF Southern Section Div. V playoffs as the league's No. 3 seed.
Girls: Nancy Marin
If there was ever a girl who needed some soothing ointment on her shoulder, it's Nancy. The senior outside hitter for the Gladiators had to play three times last week in the CIF Southern Section Div. II-A playoffs and each match came through with gaudy kill totals. In a 15-7, 15-11, 15-6 win vs. La Serna of Whittier in a wild card match on Tuesday, Marin hammered down 43 kills. Two nights later, she racked up 37 kills with five aces and 15 digs in a 15-13, 12-15, 15-5, 12-15, 15-10 triumph over Ventura. Finally, on Saturday, in a quarterfinal match agains Mayfair of Lakewood, Marin was at it again with 41 kills as the Gladiators topped the Monsoons 13-15, 16-14, 15-7, 13-15, 15-10. That's 121 kills, all within five days. Ouch!
