California 2009 Preseason Rankings: QBs

In one of the richest years for quarterbacks from California in some time, Santa Ana Mater Dei's Matt Barkley leads the list of top passers from the Golden State...

The class of 2009 at quarterback is one of the best group of passers to come through the Golden State in years.  Already six commits are headed to the Pac-10, and a few more are headed to the top WAC programs.  Barkley leads the list behind center.

1. Matt Barkley, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei- USC
The nation's top-ranked quarterback, Barkley enters his fourth year as the Monarchs' starting quarterback.

2. Richard Brehaut, Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Los Osos - UCLA
A great spring and summer has firmly entrenched him as the #2 quarterback in the West.

3. Allan Bridgford, Mission Viejo (Calif.)- California
He too had a great spring and summer and is the next bigtime quarterback from the Mission Viejo quarterback factory.

4. Josh Nunes, Upland (Calif.)- Tennessee
Nunes has a good, strong arm and the brains to match it.

5. Jordan Wynn, Oceanside (Calif.)- Colorado
A true winner, Wynn has the "it" factor and is looking to lead the Pirates to a second straight state title.

6. Joe Southwick, Danville (Calif.) San Ramon Valley- Boise State
The top quarterback prospect in NorCal, Southwick is poised to lead his school to another CIF section title.

7. Cody Vaz, Stockton (Calif.) St. Mary's- Oregon State
What Vaz lacks in height, he makes up in smarts, mobility and pocket presence.

8. Sean Schroeder, Dana Hills (Calif.)- Duke
Despite lacking the talent around him, Schroeder is an accurate, precise passer who will excel under QB guru David Cutcliffe.

9. Derek Carr, Bakersfield (Calif.) Christian- Fresno State
The younger brother of former Bulldog star and #1 NFL draft pick, Carr is back in California after playing in Texas the past three years

10. Corey Nielsen, Cerritos (Calif.) Gahr- Hawaii
While he may not be the ideal size, you can't argue with his 4,000-yard season as a junior, and he's just getting started.

Top 5 Dual Threat

1. Tate Forcier, San Diego (Calif.) Scripps Ranch
Is the best quarterback from the Forcier family, and may have the strongest arm of any passer around.

2. Austyn Carta-Samuels, San Jose (Calif.) Bellarmine Prep- San Jose State
His big spring was capitalized with top quarterback honors at the Los Angeles UnderArmour/ Combine.

3. Clark Evans, Los Alamitos (Calif.)- Colorado
Since his sophomore year, he's been drawing comparisons to Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, and Evans is still improving

4. Taylor Martinez, Corona (Calif.) Centennial- Nebraska
Another phenomenal athlete playing quarterback, Martinez could be a safety for the Huskers.

5. Jeff Tuel, Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West- Washington State
