California 2009 Preseason Rankings: DLs

Will Sutton and Edward Nuckols lead the tackle list while James Boyd and Nathan Mayfield top the list at end in the California defensive line rankings...

The tackle depth is down in the Golden State, as is the end position, but there is still some talent up front in the trenches, led by Sutton and Nuckols inside and Boyd and Mayfield on the edge.

Defensive Tackles

1. Will Sutton, Corona (Calif.) Centennial
The best defensive tackle at the Los Angeles UnderArmour/ Combine, had a dominant performance in the state championship game.

2. Edward Nuckols, San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills
Extremely athletic for his size, also plays fullback for the Grizzlies.

3. William Hodgman, Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O'Dowd
At one time was Oregon's top line prospect, but will now team with elite 2010 defender Chris Martin to give O'Dowd a stout front seven

4. Noel Beckles, Los Angeles (Calif.) Verbum Dei
The top defensive tackle in Los Angeles, Beckles is poised for a big senior season.

5. Justin Brown, Compton (Calif.)
The anchor of the Tarbabes defensive lineman, he and cousin Christ Metcalf strengthen the Compton defense.

6. Justin Clayton, Napa (Calif.) Justin Siena- Washington State
Could be the top defensive player in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

7. Sione Tuihalamaka, Gardena (Calif.) Serra
Had a great spring and will get plenty of chances to show his skill this fall.  Could also play on the offensive line.

Defensive Ends

1. James Boyd, Los Angeles (Calif.) Jordan- USC
Elite athlete, threw for over 2,000 yards as a quarterback, but it's at defensive end the Trojans envision him.

2. Nathan Mayfield, Merced (Calif.)
Had one of the best springs of any prospect from Central California and is one of the top uncommitted defensive lineman available.

3. Anthony Anderson, La Mesa (Calif.) Helix- Oregon
Had the best day of any defensive end at the UnderArmour/ Combine in Los Angeles.

4. Jackson Powell, Newbury Park (Calif.)
Has great bloodlines with both his father and brother having played at USC.

5. Nicholas Alexander, Los Angeles (Calif.) Crenshaw
His bloodlines aren't bad either, his grandfather is an NFL Hall of Famer, and he'll come into his own this season.
