State Athletes of the Week
Boys: Clifton Smith
Smith, one of the most versatile football players in the state, was at it again last week during the Tigers' 35-14 victory over Liberty of Bakersfield in the CIF Central Section Yosemite Small Division playoffs. He rushed 15 times for 111 yards and four TDs, caught two passes for 53 yards and one TD, helped disrupt Liberty's passing game as a defender, averaged 35 yards as a punter and returned punts and kickoffs. Immediately after that game, Smith headed for bed so he could catch a flight early the next morning for a recruiting trip to Pullman, Wash. He was on the sidelines as a guest of Washington State in that team's triple overtime loss to Washington. Smith's four touchdowns against Liberty gave him 57 for his career and four more in this week's championship game against Centennial of Bakersfield will put him into the top 10 on the section's all-time list.
Girls: Amanda Fox
(El Molino, Forestville)
Amanda is a 6-3 middle blocker for the Lions who banged away for 38 kills in last Saturday's CIF North Coast Section Div. III championship match. She led El Molino to a 14-16, 15-6, 10-15, 15-7, 16-14 triumph over Northgate of Walnut Creek, which is the second straight section title for the Lions. Fox is regarded as one of the state's best players, which is shown by her college commitment to the University of California as well as her placement of 53rd on the Student Sports list of the nation's Hot 100 volleyball recruits.
